Just a fad? With all that you’ve been told about the importance of getting your company online with social media, how could it just be a fad? A recent article by Jesse Stanchak titled “Are you sick of social media?” suggests that social media isn’t the next big thing anymore. It’s simply something that everybody is already doing.
So what does this mean for you and your business? It means that while social media may not be eternal, the principles that govern it certainly are. Social media is just a more high-tech way of saying word of mouth. The same way that your customers used to talk about you with their friends or family over the phone or at a dinner party now do it online. In fact, recent studies have shown that over 25% of Americans are now using social media to connect with their friends and loved ones.
This means that instead of one negative remark being shared one person at a time, your disgruntled customers now share their frustrations with hundreds of listeners at a time. The same goes for positive remarks. If a customer is happy with the service they are receiving, they happily update their facebook status, tweet about it on twitter, or–in extreme cases–make a video and post it to YouTube.
So while social media may not be the technology to end all technology, the principles that govern it are certainly around to say. The important thing is to remember to pay attention to what your customers and the public are saying about your company: whether it’s online, over the phone, or in the park. Know what your customers are saying about you.
